Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is supporting Tuskegee University students as conversations continue around the school’s dress code and professional expectations.

The organization donated more than 1,000 pieces of professional clothing to the Golden Tiger Community Closet. It also provided $5,000 in scholarship support.

The donations were announced during Delta Sigma Theta’s 50th Southern Region Conference in Atlanta. More than 8,000 members attended from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and the Bahamas.

Tuskegee University President and CEO Dr. Mark A. Brown thanked the sorority during the conference’s closing ecumenical service. He also recognized former Delta Sigma Theta National President Dr. Louise A. Rice.

Rice graduated from Tuskegee in 1963 and joined the sorority through its Gamma Tau Chapter in 1961.

“Her distinguished service and lifetime dedication to advancing education and opportunity, reflects the transformative power of a Tuskegee education,” Brown said. “Today, through this remarkable donation Delta Sigma Theta is helping prepare another generation of scholars, professionals, and servant leaders to leave Tuskegee ready to change the world.”

The donation arrives as the Tuskegee University dress code has generated discussion about student presentation and institutional expectations. Delta Sigma Theta’s contribution adds a practical resource for students who may not own professional clothing.

Outgoing Southern Region director Amaris Johnson helped organize the effort through the sorority’s Collegiate Closet. The program supports similar clothing resources across its network of 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters.

Johnson said the goal is to eliminate financial obstacles facing students who need professional wardrobes. Sorority members who attend official events without the required business attire may also receive support.

“There is no punishment or shame here,” Johnson said. “And we are making sure our closet reflects a wide range of sizes so that everyone can be supported and served.”

That approach places assistance beside expectations. While a dress code can outline how students should present themselves, a community closet gives them access to the clothing needed to meet those standards.

Tuskegee sent a university van to Atlanta to collect the donation. The clothing arrived on campus the following Monday.

The Golden Tiger Community Closet has served students since 2023. Tuskegee University officials now plan to expand the program.

Walter P. Cooper Sr., director of the Career Education and Leadership Development Center, said professional presentation fits within Tuskegee’s broader student-success strategy.

“Dressing appropriately in any given space is part of our holistic student success model to care for and support our students academically, professionally and personally,” Cooper said.

Delta Sigma Theta has deep ties to the university. In 1922, Zeta Beta—now known as the Tuskegee Alumnae Chapter—became the sorority’s first chapter in the South.

More than a century later, the organization is again investing in Tuskegee University. Its latest donation connects the school’s dress code and professional standards with material support for the students expected to meet them.
